Special Care Dental Specialists follow the Mental Capacity Act 2005 to provide care for patients with learning disabilities, cognitive impairment, and those on palliative or end-of-life care. We prioritise autonomy by using appropriate language to ensure valid consent. If a patient lacks capacity, a decision can be made on their behalf only with specific provisions in place, such as written advance decision, enduring power of attorney, a decision by the court of protection, best interest discussions, or two-doctor consents. Patients can also arrange for their own decision-making, which will be acted upon if they lose capacity.
